Every Day Counts Counting Tape and Clip Collection Beginning of the Year

Instructor Notes:

• For materials preparations, click again on Samples and select Getting Started K.

• Read Every Day Counts Teacher's Guide, Ardell, Gillespie, and Kanter, Great Source, 2005 edition, p. 8, 21-26.

The purpose of the Counting Tape and Clip Collection is to increase children's number sense over time. Each day of school one 3" colored paper square from the EDC kit will be attached to the Counting Tape, repeating a sequence of colors every ten days. The ten different colors make it easier for children to locate a numeral and for them to see the 1 to 9 counting pattern that repeats with every decade. Drawing a Zero the Hero face on 10, 20, 30, and so on will highlight each completed group of ten.

The Clip Collection, with chains of ten clips, also helps children see the day's number as groups of ten and leftover ones. Each day, in addition to having the class count the squares or clips with 1 to 1 correspondence, you may also want to model writing the day's numeral to help children understand the meaning of the digits. For example, as we write 12 we can say, "1 full group (or chain) of ten and 2 extra ones."

Counting Tape - Beginning of the Year

Grade K
Aug or Sept

Let's count the days we have come to school using our Counting Tape (or Clip Collection) to see what number we will have today.

So what number will we write for the Day of School today? (Twelve)

How will we write it? ( One, for our first group of ten days (or first chain of ten clips) and two for our two extra ones)

How do we read it? (Twelve, or one group (or chain) of ten and two extra ones)

If today is Day 12, how many days have we come to school since Day 10? (Model the meaning of the word since by pointing to 10 and then counting up two more touching 11 and 12 as the class counts to find the difference of two.)

What Day of School came just before gray Day 5? (Day 4) Just before brown Day 8? (Day 7), and so on.

What Day of School came just after gray Day 5? (Day 6) Just after brown Day 8? (Day 9), and so on.

When we look at our Clip Collection what do you notice about the clips? (There are twelve; There is one chain of ten and two extras.)

Every Day Counts Calendar - Beginning of September or First Month of School

Instructor Notes:

• For materials preparations, click again on Samples and select Getting Started K.

• Read Every Day Counts Teacher's Guide, Kanter and Gillespie, Great Source, 2005 edition, p. 8, 18-21.

If you are on year-round schedule you may want to use the August calendar pieces during the first month of your school year and repeat the pattern using the September pieces during your next month. If you are on a traditional school year and begin before September, you can use the August pieces in August and revisit the basic pattern in September using September pieces.

To introduce the Calendar you might start with a blank Calendar and point out and name the days of the week across the top. Some teachers like to share a Days of the Week song, for example, repeating the days of the week to the tune of Oh My Darling Clementine).

Turn over green calendar pieces for school days and yellow pieces for weekends up to the present day. Some days practice saying the numerals in order. On other days name the colors noting the green "go" school days and yellow "slow" weekend days at home.

Question Starter Card - Adapt to any early date. See Every Day Counts, 2005 edition, pages 18 - 21 for questions to add to card.

Calendar - Beginning of the Month

Grade K

SEPTEMBER

Let's say the days of the week together. (Sunday, Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday, Friday, Saturday.) Can you start again and stop on today?

We say, "Today is ______, September (or August) ___." Let's say it together.

Now that we can see all the dates up to today, can we count the days we see so far, beginning with 1? (1,2,3...)

How many days until ________'s birthday?

How many children have a birthday this month?

What is the color the pieces on our weekend days, Saturday and Sunday?
